Pop Rocks: Jazmine Sullivan “Bust Your Windows”

Somebody somewhere is putting together a mix CD of “psycho ex-girlfriend” songs. On that disc, among such songs as Brooke Valentine’s “I Want You Dead,” Carrie Underwood’s “Before He Cheats,” and Rihanna’s “Breakin’ Dishes,” there’s Jazmine Sullivan’s “Bust Your Windows.” On the crazy-o-meter, Sullivan ranks between Valentine (”I’d rather see you in the cemetery, gagging, boxed up, full of maggots”) and Rihanna (”I’m roasting marshmallows on the fire, and what I’m burning is your attire”). She scolds herself for being petty enough to break the windows out of her ex’s car, but lets it slide because he deserves for something to hurt him.
What makes it special? It’s an R&B song with one foot in tango, and it’s done in the minimal style that’s become so popular in the mid-Timbaland era. Sullivan’s husky, Mary J. Blige-esque voice delivers the snarly lyrics with a sort of velvet that brings to mind [...]
