John Piper sermon notes

What a great message! These are just my notes from it. It is by no means comprehensive, but I hope that John Piper’s thrust is minimally captured and not distorted by my notes. I would encourage you to listen to it for yourself here: http://www.desiringgod.org/ResourceLibrary/Sermons/ByDate/2008/3418_This_Is_He_Who_Baptizes_with_the_Holy_Spirit/
This is the second part of a message, the first part is called “Behold the Lamb of God” from 11/16/2008 if you want to look for it. This is a great message as well, but I didn’t take any notes on it so you’ll have to do those yourself
Thanks Robert for giving me a heads up about this message!!
THIS IS HE WHO BAPTIZES WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT - 11/23/2008(all quotes, unless otherwise noted, are John Piper)
John 1:29 ESVThe next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

LOL: Kiss Shreds

I was all prepared to write a post about how, while I DO appreciate the increased Fall Out Boy presence in the media, I am sorely disappointed that the entire media is participating in cockteasery because the album isn’t actually available until December 16. Then again, I thought that I’d spare you until the 17th, when I ooze love or spew hateful disappointment as a result of said album. Instead, I do the far more amusing thing: I give you…Kiss Shreds.

Mad props to bassist/guitarist/songwriter/cool dude Chris Bradley for showing this to me. Oh, and Look What I Did will have a new album out soon, which you should purchase so Chris can become a rock star and stop having to work in an office when he’s not touring. Just sayin.

I stole this blog from Josh Harris..

Charles Spurgeon: Being Unfashionable
My friend Tullian Tchividjian just finished writing his second book entitled Unfashionable. The subtitles sums up the message: “Making a difference in the world by being different.” He was thrilled to discover the following quote by Charles Spurgeon from a sermon on Joshua 24:15, delivered on April 18, 1875:
The great guide of the world is fashion and it’s god is respectability–two phantoms at which brave men laugh! How many of you look around on society to know what to do? You watch the general current and then float upon it! You study the popular breeze and shift your sails to suit it. True men do not so! You ask, “Is it fashionable? If it is fashionable, it must be done.” Fashion is the law of multitudes, but it is nothing more than the common consent of fools.
May God give Christians the courage to [...]

Recently acquired goodies.

The Beats: From Kerouac to Kesey, An Illustrated Journey Through the Beat Generation by Mike Evans
This is one sweet book.  It’s a great overview of the scene, including the post-war mood of the country that created the Beats, the writers and artists themselves, and the goofy media-created “Beatnik” craze that followed.  It ends with a look at the post-Beat scene of the 60’s and beyond. Generously illustrated with tons of photographs that will have you perusing this book for hours.  And, not to be a shill for Amazon.com by any means, but they currently have this large, hardcover book on sale for practically nothing.  Do yourself a favor and snag a copy ASAP.
Gang of Souls: A Generation of Beat Poets directed by Maria Beatty
It’s hard to believe this film is almost 20 years old.  It’s a great collection of interviews with and readings by Beat poets, Old Guard (Ginsberg, Burroughs, [...]

Hey cats and kittens.

What is a Beatnik Goth?  Well, the Beats were already kind of Goth, weren’t they?  I’m not sure if it’s because of a sometimes pessimistic view of the world, an appetite for self-destruction, or all those black clothes.  Certainly, there is a big difference between the real Beat Generation writers, poets and artists, and the black-clad, bongo-thwacking Beatnik created by the media.  I think what I’m aiming for is a playful combination of the fashion styles of the stereotypical Beatnik and the stereotypical Goth, with a real respect for and love of the writings and art of the Beat Generation of the 1950’s.
So join me, won’t you, as we explore the world of the Beatnik Goth.  Or the Goth Beatnik, depending on your perspective.

Amanda Palmer Rocks My Lame Ass

You always know that you’ve missed a good party when your friend calls you the next day and starts the conversation with, “dude, you TOTALLY missed it…” Last night, Jen and I went to see Amanda Palmer at Mercy Lounge and, well, you totally missed it.
The opening bands were good, especially the quasi-Vaudevillian Vermillion Lies, but Amanda Palmer’s set blew everybody else out of the water. Rising from her conceptual grave (all of the merch had a Twin Peaksian “Who Killed Amanda Palmer?” theme) draped in ivory lace and flanked by interpretive dancers, Palmer took the stage and proceeded to rock out on her keyboard. Yeah, I know. It’s exceedingly difficult to look cool while playing piano, and even harder to rock out while playing piano. Even Tori’s been known to resort to a sequined jumpsuit. You’ll have to trust me on this one, though. It rocked. A few highlights:
“Guitar [...]

The Essential: Jill Tracy

Just when I start to think that emusic has begun to outlive its usefulness for me, I stumble upon an entire discography of awesomeness and decide that emusic ain’t so shark-jumping after all. Case in point: Jill Tracy. She’s like a dark Little Earthquakes-era Tori amos, a less effed-up Fiona Apple and a less-prone-to-screaming Amanda Palmer all rolled into one. That is to say, she can play the living hell out of a piano, write a darn good song, AND do both while steering subject matter toward poisoning people, armageddon, and disembowelment. What is not to love? While every album is a best-of, I will attempt to limit myself to 3 songs per album. (But, for real….listen to the rest of the albums.)
Album: Quintessentially Unreal
- “Between The Black”: Jaunty, torchlight piano provides a background for this collage of antonyms.
- “Hour After Hour”: Tight piano-playing, mixed with a tasty chorus that [...]

Priestly Goth Preaching Chronicles VIII

After the incident with the homeless man in October, things have slowed down a little bit and things have returned to some equilibrium. Though it has also brought up some tensions that we are seeking to work through.
I did have the obove on my mind in preparing for and preaching yesterdays sermon But it was the conjunction of the eschatological Scripture texts and the election, its results and the hope Obama’s election as president gives people. Amos isn’t eschatoligical necessarily since the “Day of the Lord” in Amos doesn’t necessarily mean the “Last Days” or the end of the age. However, what attends to the “Day of the Lord” in Amos gives shape to the notions of the “last days” as they develop in the tradition. the Thessalonians passage and the Parable of the 10 virgins are clearly eschatological and apocalyptic. I also picked up again [...]
