Jesus freak Hideout (Scott Fryberger): First of all, great show tonight. I love the new show that you guys have put together. What was it that inspired you to write the two albums in the way that you did, with the stories and everything?

On a personal Retreat

I am off to St Gregory’s Abbey for what will be about a 24 hour retreat. Much needed. I went on retreat there last summer and felt drawn to return and it has taken almost a year for me to do so. It has been too long.

Priestly Goth Preaching Chronicles

I was sick for much of last week so, I failed to blog that I preached and presided at St Elias Christian Church the Arabic church that also meets at Immanuel Lutheran. The congregation is about double that of Reconciler but the attendance last Sunday (June 15th) was about the size of Reconciler’s except the church meets in the main sanctuary so it was a little odd, I did not preach from the

sweet, sweet reality

From Psalm 18:31-32
For who is God, but the Lord?
And who is a rock, except our God?—
the God who equipped me with strength
and made my way blameless.

This is such a sweet reality. It may seem like a DUH statement, but in reality…. how often am I trying to play the role of the Holy Spirit in the sanctification of others? How often am I convinced that I know all the workings of situations in life? How often do I make attempts to handle those situations in self-sufficiency, all the while knowing that I will fail?
Who is God? God, Jesus, Holy Spirit…Who is not God? Josh…Who is a rock? The Father, the Son, the Spirit…Who thinks he’s a rock but really isn’? Josh…
God, you are so sweet to give us Truth in your word…

Miniature St. Michael icon

So, My wife suggested that I take a picture of the miniature icon alongside a coin to give a clear sense of the scale, and Justin agreed that I should do this. So below is the icon of St. Michael the Archangel with a quarter.

Psalm 16

In my Bible reading this morning, I was in Psalm 16, which is as follows: (ESV)
You Will Not Abandon My Soul
16 A Miktam of David.
1 Preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge.
2 I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord;
I have no good apart from you.”
3 As for the saints in the land, they are the excellent ones,
in whom is all my delight.
4 The sorrows of those who run after another god shall multiply;
their drink offerings of blood I will not pour out
or take their names on my lips.
5 The Lord is [...]

Prophetic Preaching and Obama and American Politics and Culture

Last Sunday we had a guest preacher from a congregation that has been supportive of Reconciler since its beginning and was the ordaining Congregation of our first Baptist Pastor Tripp. Her sermon was entitled "In Defense of Prophetic Preaching". On one hand she took the words of Jeremiah and of Jesus in the Gospels that are hard hitting and provocative, to give context to the type of

Meeting the new neighbors

I had talked to our new neighbors across the street once the day they were moving in, but I had a little more intimate time with them last night. After a storm, the power was out in our neighborhood. Jenny and I were sitting in the living room with the windows open and saw Mike and his wife come outside, and Mike has a shovel.. Obviously, he is stalking something. I run outside, under the guise of wondering if they know when the power will be back on, to see what he’s after. A snake!! I don’t know much about snakes, but Mike says he thinks it’s a copperhead. All I know is that this joker is 4 feet long and slithering just outside of my yard. So, I run in the garage to grab my shovel. After much circling and hesitation, knowing that copperheads are very poisonous as well [...]

If I were a Guitar Hero, thankfully I’m an object of mercy

I love the guitar. I love listening to it played skillfully, and I love to play it (unskillfully, as it is). This afternoon while Emma and I were hanging out and having some lunch together, I had my iTunes library playing. Joe Satriani comes on with Ceremony, which I believe is Satch at his most skillful. It is an absolute delight for me to hear him play, and when Ceremony came on I could not help but jump up and show Emma how skillful I am at playing Ceremony on air guitar. Emma is my audience and Joe is my band. And it occurs to me, or God spoke to me… if I were to be endowed with the gift of guitar playing as the likes of Joe Satriani or anyone else in that echelon of skill, I would surely use it for my own glory. Look at how awesome [...]
